He then moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he trained for many years under Mestre Gigante. Around this time, he received the nickname Maó Branca (White Hand) from his mestre, and became a mestre himself in 1985. When he returned to Belo Horizonte, he founded Capoeira Gerais and devoted himself to helping children from disadvantaged areas through capoeira and the development and popularization of capoeira all around the world.
